Conventional Fishing on the Klickitat River

As the days shorten and the air cools, the Klickitat River becomes a prime destination for steelhead and salmon. Fall through early winter is when this canyon river shows its best, offering anglers the chance to connect with powerful fish using straightforward, proven gear and techniques.

For those who prefer rods and reels over fly rods, conventional fishing is an exciting and accessible way to experience the Klickitat. Guided by Nate Funmaker, you’ll drift productive stretches of the river, using techniques designed for the season and the conditions.

The Fall Season

September through November is the heart of the Klickitat season. Chinook and coho salmon make their push upriver, filling deep pools and tailouts with energy and opportunity. Mixed in are steelhead fresh from the Columbia — aggressive, hard-fighting fish that challenge even experienced anglers.

Fall trips are action-oriented: side-drifting bait, back-trolling plugs, or drifting yarn and eggs through prime lies. These proven methods consistently produce fish and keep rods bent throughout the day.

Early Winter Opportunities

By late November, the river begins to quiet down as the season nears its end. Larger wild steelhead continue to move in during this time, offering anglers one last opportunity before the salmon and steelhead season closes on December 1st. While conditions can be more demanding — with cold mornings, fluctuating clarity, and fewer bites — the final days of the season can still deliver memorable catches for those willing to put in the effort.

Frequently Asked Questions – Klickitat River Steelhead Trips

Do I need fishing experience for a conventional trip?

No. Conventional trips are designed to be accessible to anyone, from complete beginners to seasoned anglers. Nate provides all the gear and instruction you’ll need to be successful.

The Klickitat is best fished from September through early December, when salmon and steelhead runs overlap. Fall is the most consistent time for action, while late fall and early winter can bring fewer bites but often bigger fish.

Depending on the season and conditions, you might back-troll plugs for salmon, side-drift bait for steelhead, or drift eggs and yarn through prime runs. Nate chooses the technique that gives you the best chance at fish on that day.

All rods, reels, tackle, and bait are provided. You only need to bring a Washington fishing license with steelhead/salmon endorsement, appropriate clothing, and a cooler if you plan to keep salmon when regulations allow.

It depends on the regulations for the species you catch. Many steelhead are catch-and-release only, but salmon retention is often allowed during the fall season. Nate will explain current rules before your trip.

Yes. Because there’s no steep learning curve, conventional trips are an excellent option for families and younger anglers. The emphasis is on action and enjoyment, making them more beginner-friendly than fly or spey trips.

Full-day trips typically last 6–8 hours, while half-day trips are around 4 hours. Both options give you plenty of time on the water in prime fishing areas.

The Klickitat is a glacial river, so clarity can shift quickly with rain or snowmelt. If conditions are unfishable, Nate will work with you to reschedule or adjust your trip to maximize your chances of success.

Dress in layers to stay comfortable during fall and winter weather. A rain jacket, warm hat, gloves, waterproof boots or waders, polarized sunglasses, and snacks or drinks you prefer are recommended.
